NEW YORK, May 9, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The NHP Foundation (NHPF) is pleased to announce that The Strand Residences has been awarded Enterprise Green Communities certification.
The Strand Residences is a new 86-unit affordable apartment building in Washington, DC's Deanwood neighborhood. Enterprise Green Communities is the country's only national green building certification program designed explicitly for the affordable housing sector. It features a comprehensive set of guidelines to encourage green building practices.
"Attaining this Green Communities certification in Washington, DC is a point of pride for NHPF as we work to design and build sustainably throughout our national footprint," said Scott Barkan, Senior Vice President and the project's lead developer.
The Strand Residences was constructed on an assemblage of underutilized land. The land was contaminated with dry cleaning solvents that prevented development, a classic brownfield in a city exploding with growth. The land assemblage was accepted into the city's Voluntary Clean-Up program to ensure proper remediation. No residents were displaced for the development and a local restaurant was relocated to a new nearby facility that ensured it can continue to operate in the neighborhood.
In addition to fulfilling all the program's mandatory criteria, the Strand Residences achieved certification points for:
- Having three times the density of nearby blocks.
- Being located within a half-mile of transit services.
- Achieving at least 20% local employment.
- Retaining the first inch of rain on-site.
- Reducing the heat-island effect by installing a "green-roof" and using light-colored roof materials.
- Constructing a building that is at least 5% more efficient than the energy and building codes require.
- Not having any combustion in the building.
The Enterprise Green Communities Criteria was created in 2004 to yield lowered utility costs, a healthier living environment and increased sustainability while benefiting the financial stability of both residents and affordable housing owners.
"By designing and building to the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria, The NHP Foundation will be providing housing that is healthy, efficient, and environmentally responsible. The residences of The Strand will have a high quality home; foundational to a good life," said Krista Egger, National Initiatives Vice President, Enterprise Community Partners.
