LA's leading home service company says a new AC unit, regular maintenance and smart thermostats are some ways to mitigate cooling costs

LOS ANGELES, July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Rooter Hero Plumbing & Air, a plumbing and HVAC company serving residential and commercial locations in California and Arizona, wants homeowners to stay cool this summer and is providing tips to help them manage the heat so they also stay more energy efficient.

"Summer seemed to be delayed in much of the country earlier this season, but it's here in full force now," said Rooter Hero CEO John Akhoian. "That means that more people are having to run their air conditioners most of the day to stay comfortable. This results in some very high utility bills. But there are a variety of ways homeowners can beat the heat without breaking the bank."

Akhoian said that homeowners with older AC systems should first consider upgrading to a newer, more efficient unit.

"It's not just that a new AC unit has new parts to help it run more efficiently, it's also that new units have updated technology that produces more cool air while using less energy," he said. "An ENERGY STAR-certified AC unit can help homeowners save 10-30% on their annual cooling costs. This is a savings of about $140 a season."

But if it's not time to trade in the old AC unit, Akhoian recommends homeowners try the following:

  • Get an annual AC tune-up. Most AC manufacturers recommend that homeowners have their system checked at least once a year. A tune-up will reveal potential issues with the system that should be fixed so it works at its most efficient, and a thorough cleaning helps increase its performance.
  • Make use of ceiling and box fans. Fans don't cool the air, but they can help push cool air from the central HVAC system throughout the house and create a cool breeze while circulating more comfortable air.
  • Manage heat gain. Homeowners should hang blackout curtains or use thick blinds and keep them closed during the hottest times of day to block sunlight. Other ways to manage the heat are to switch from incandescent bulbs to LED lights, which don't emit as much heat, and to cook outdoors or fix no-cook meals instead of turning on the stove.
  • Consider a smart thermostat. A smart thermostat "learns" homeowner behavior so it can automatically adjust its settings to cool less when no one is home.
  • Regulating personal temperatures: People should stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and they can also take cold showers to bring down their body temperature.

"Right now, there are heat waves in effect all throughout the country, including Southern California," Akhoian said. "In addition to saving money, these tips can also help you to remain healthy. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are dangerous conditions, so staying cool should be a priority this summer."
