In “Reflections on Mountaineering: A Journey Through Life as Experienced in the Mountains,” Alan V. Goldman explores these connections through a collection of 148 narrative-style poems. Written in a range of forms, including rhyming verse, blank verse and prose-poems, the collection considers the moral and emotional questions that become particularly vivid in the mountain setting. The Author reflects on awe and fear, luck and fate, the lure of the high mountains, and the way climbers perceive the passage of time during the course of performing feats of great wonder in the mountain. Other poems examine the preparation, discipline, situational awareness, the perceived passage of time, success and defeat, and the personal significance climbers attach to their experiences while climbing. Moreover, for lovers of poetry, mountaineering literature, and reflective writing, the collection offers an opportunity to consider how the challenges encountered on a mountain can mirror those faced in everyday life.
The author's background consists of a long-standing avocation in mountaineering combined with a professional career in law. He graduated from Horace Mann preparatory school in 1975, Harvard College in 1979, and Harvard Law School in 1982. Thereafter, he practiced law involving litigation during mergers and acquisitions, as well as litigation of class actions involving toxic torts and other environmental matters. His work “Reflections on Mountaineering” displays an interest in the relationship between physical experiences and broader questions of human meaning. Also, additional poems are available through his website, mountainreflections.art, where many of his book's poems are recorded in his own voice, offering another way to experience his work.
