STERLING, Va., Sept. 10, 2026
Davary & Smith Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center has completed its first year caring for patients throughout Loudoun County, Fairfax County and Northern Virginia from its Sterling office, one of the few oral surgery centers in the region built to NFPA 99 Category 1 hospital standards for anesthesia safety. Founded by dual-degree surgeons Dr. Ashkan Davary and Dr. Christopher Smith, the practice is privately owned by its surgeons — not corporate-run and not private equity-backed — and was built around a single premise: world-class oral surgery delivered with world-class hospitality.
STERLING, Va., Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Davary & Smith Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center has marked its first year in business, closing out an opening year of surgical care for patients throughout Loudoun County, Fairfax County and the wider Northern Virginia region. The practice was founded by Dr. Ashkan Davary and Dr. Christopher Smith, both dual-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeons trained in medicine and dentistry, and operates from a purpose-built surgical facility at 21351 Gentry Drive in Sterling.
What distinguishes the practice in a consolidating market is its ownership. Davary & Smith is a private, independent practice owned and operated by the two surgeons who treat its patients. It is not part of a corporate dental group and it is not backed by private equity, which means clinical decisions, scheduling, staffing and the pace of a patient visit are set by the surgeons rather than by outside investors or production targets. Dr. Davary and Dr. Smith opened the practice with a specific vision for Northern Virginia: to deliver world-class oral surgery with world-class hospitality, and to prove those two things do not have to be traded against one another.
That vision shaped the facility itself. Davary & Smith operates one of the few oral surgery centers in Northern Virginia constructed to NFPA 99 Category 1 hospital standards, with modern anesthesia delivery systems, continuous patient monitoring and full backup power. The environment supports the practice's IV sedation program, administered and monitored throughout each procedure by the surgical team, and allows the surgeons to treat complex cases in an office setting that meets the safety requirements of a hospital or ambulatory surgery center.
Non-opioid pain management has been a core part of the practice since it opened, not a recent addition. Every recovery plan is built around reducing or eliminating the need for take-home narcotic prescriptions, anchored by EXPAREL®, a long-acting local anesthetic administered at the surgical site that can provide targeted relief through the first days of recovery, and supported by non-opioid oral medications where clinically appropriate. For many patients — particularly teenagers and young adults having wisdom teeth removed — surgery is a first exposure to prescription pain medication, and the surgeons treat limiting that exposure as a standing obligation rather than an option.
Over the first year, Dr. Davary and Dr. Smith treated patients across the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including wisdom teeth removal, complex and surgical tooth extractions, dental implant placement, full-arch implant restoration, bone grafting, sinus lifts, pre-prosthetic surgery, oral pathology and pediatric oral surgery. General dentists throughout Loudoun and Fairfax counties have referred patients requiring hospital-level anesthesia or surgical complexity beyond the general dental setting. A substantial number of patients have also come to the practice directly, finding it online, researching the surgeons' credentials and the facility's anesthesia standards, and scheduling a consultation without a referral — a pattern the founders attribute to patients who want to choose their own surgeon.
Independence also shows up in how appointments run. Consultations are unhurried, patients have direct access to the surgeons, and treatment plans and costs are explained in full before anything is scheduled. It is an approach the founders describe as concierge-level care, and one they credit for the dentist relationships and patient reviews the practice accumulated during its first year.
"We built this practice ourselves, and we own it ourselves. There is no corporate parent and no private equity firm behind us, and that was deliberate," said Dr. Ashkan Davary. "It means nobody outside this building decides how long I spend with a patient or what a recovery plan looks like. The goal from day one was to bring world-class oral surgery to Northern Virginia and deliver it with world-class hospitality — the anesthesia safety standards of a hospital, with the attention of a small office. What has meant the most this first year is the trust: patients who were genuinely afraid of oral surgery telling us afterward it was easier than they expected, dentists across Loudoun and Fairfax counties sending us their own patients, and families finding us on their own and choosing us. Dr. Smith and I are grateful for all of it, and it is what we intend to keep building on."
Davary & Smith enters its second year continuing to accept both dentist referrals and direct patient inquiries across Sterling, Ashburn, Leesburg, Fairfax and the surrounding Northern Virginia communities. Information about the practice and its surgical services is available at www.davarysmith.com.
