New Orleans, LA September 15, 2026 --(PR.com)-- Absinthia Bottled Spirits announces the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for The Green Fairy’s Canvas: Absinthe’s Influence on Art and Culture, the first hardcover edition of author, spirits producer and art historian Absinthia Vermut’s exploration of the drink’s extraordinary place in art, literature and cultural history.
From Manet and Degas to Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso, Absinthe appears again and again in the art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Green Fairy’s Canvas explores those works alongside the history of the spirit itself, tracing Absinthe from its medicinal beginnings in Switzerland through the cafés of Belle Époque Paris, the moral panic surrounding it, prohibition and its eventual return.
Vermut earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Art History from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MBA from Babson College. Her fascination with Absinthe began nearly three decades ago, ten years before the U.S. ban was lifted. In 2023, a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Manet/Degas exhibition brought her two worlds together and inspired the book: Why did this particular drink appear so often in the art of the period, and how did the beautiful “Green Fairy” become associated with madness, murder and social decay?
Today, Vermut is the first woman to distill Absinthe in New Orleans. Her Absinthes have earned 20 gold medals, including three consecutive years at the New Orleans Spirits Competition, as well as honors from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, New York International Spirits Competition, Beverage Testing Institute and Sunset Magazine’s International Spirits Competition.
The book’s paperback debuted this July at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans. Vermut sold 11 copies in the first hour of her book signing and has since placed the book in New Orleans bookstores including Faulkner House Books, located in the former residence of William Faulkner.
The Kickstarter transforms the book into an approximately 150-page, full-color, 11 × 8.5-inch landscape collector’s edition designed to give its artwork more room. The hardcover is planned with Smyth-sewn binding, gold-gilded page edges, gold foil stamping, a matte cover with spot UV details, a coordinating dust jacket and a custom ribbon bookmark.
Public reward tiers begin at $49 for the premium hardcover. A $75 signed-and-numbered reward tier also includes signed artwork by cover artist and illustrator Natalia Kadish. The campaign also offers a limited edition of just 10 individually signed and numbered hand-bound leather copies.
The campaign has an $11,000 funding goal, with additional features unlocking as support grows. At $17,500, a custom Absinthia Absinthe spoon will unlock as an optional paid add-on. Additional collector’s-edition upgrades are planned as the campaign grows. We’ll reveal each new stretch goal as we get closer.
“I’ve spent nearly three decades looking at Absinthe through both of my worlds, as an art historian and as someone who eventually became an Absinthe producer. The Green Fairy’s Canvas brings those two things together. I love the paperback, but making it confirmed something I’d been thinking throughout the design process: the art needs more room. This hardcover gives me the chance to present the book the way I always wanted to,” said Vermut.
The Kickstarter funds a new print run distinct from the paperback edition currently available in select New Orleans bookstores.
