Ziploc® Brand and Too Good To Go Launch "Surprise Seconds" to Give Good Food a Second Act
New survey1* finds 43% of Canadians have thrown away food that was still good because they didn't know what to do with it; Ziploc® Brand, Too Good To Go and chef Eric Chong team up to inspire what comes next
TORONTO, Sept. 3, 2026 /CNW/ -- Ziploc® Brand, a trusted name in food storage and preservation for more than 50 years, and Too Good To Go, a social-impact company for surplus food, today announced Surprise Seconds, a new campaign designed to help Canadians make more of the food already in their kitchens — whether carried home from a restaurant or left over from a meal they cooked themselves.
The partnership brings together two complementary approaches to helping good food go further: Ziploc® Brand Bags provide food storage solutions that help keep food fresh, while Too Good To Go helps consumers secure good food at a discount and partners with businesses to put surplus food to use. Surprise Seconds takes the next step, offering inspiration for turning saved food into something entirely new – making what comes next feel creative, craveable and worth looking forward to.
At the centre of the campaign is the Wheel of Sandwiches, an interactive food-truck experience coming to Toronto on Sept. 29 that reimagines dishes from participating Too Good To Go restaurant partners as inventive new sandwiches. The experience will be led by chef Eric Chong of aKin, the critically acclaimed Michelin-starred, modern Asian-inspired fine dining restaurant in downtown Toronto known for its inventive, blind tasting menu. Surprise Seconds will also provide recipe ideas and practical storage guidance through the Ziploc® Brand website and social media, supported by a connected out-of-home advertising campaign.
"Rescuing surplus food is just the beginning — what happens once it gets home matters too," said Chris MacAulay, Vice President of Operations for North America at Too Good To Go. "Too Good To Go helps get surplus food into people's hands, while Ziploc® Brand helps them keep it fresh and find new ways to enjoy it. Together, we're helping people make more of the food they already have."
Canadians want to waste less—and a little inspiration can help
New research commissioned by Ziploc® Brand shows that Canadians care about avoiding food waste but knowing what to do with leftovers can still be a barrier.
- Almost every Canadian (97%) says avoiding food waste is important to them.
- Nearly one in three (33%) say they throw food away at least once a week.
- More than two in five (43%) have thrown food away that was still perfectly good because they did not know what to do with it.
- Only about one in three (34%) say they usually turn their leftovers into something new.
The research also highlights the value of simple, practical inspiration, with nearly one in four Canadians (26%) saying recipe ideas, lunch inspiration and better storage would help them make more of their leftovers.
The findings point to a simple opportunity: giving people more inspiration for what to do with the food they have already saved.
Inspiration for making good food go further
Surprise Seconds was created to spark that missing idea. Rather than treating leftovers and restaurant extras as a lesser repeat of yesterday's meal, the campaign will provide practical, craveable examples of how they can serve as the foundation for something entirely different.
Beginning today, a dedicated Surprise Seconds hub on the Ziploc® Brand website will bring that inspiration to kitchens across the country. Through recipes, chef and creator inspiration, food rescue and practical storage tips, Ziploc® Brand and partners will show how properly storing restaurant and home-cooked leftovers can help extend the life of food and inspire new meals, giving consumers more ways to rethink and reimagine the food they already have.
Across social media, Ziploc® Brand, Too Good To Go, chef Eric Chong and participating restaurants will each contribute to the "first to second" story:
- Ziploc® Brand: recipes and product solutions for storing leftovers and extra food.
- Too Good To Go: food rescue and Surprise Bag awareness.
- Chef Eric Chong: original recipe development and food transformations.
- Participating creators: share easy-to-replicate second-act recipes.
Spin the Wheel, Meet Your Second
The campaign will come to life in Toronto on Sept. 29 with Wheel of Sandwiches, an interactive food-truck experience led by chef Eric Chong.
At Wheel of Sandwiches, each landing spot features an original dish—a "first"—from a participating Too Good To Go restaurant partner. Visitors will spin the wheel to discover their "first," then receive Chong's corresponding "Surprise Second": a sandwich inspired by and created from that restaurant's dish.
"Making something new with leftovers is one of the simplest ways to make the most of the food we have," said Chong. "Instead of thinking of leftovers as a repeat of yesterday's meal, I like to look at them as ingredients for something completely new. Ziploc® Brand Bags help you extend the life of food, and with Surprise Seconds I hope we can inspire people to get creative using what they already have to create something they might not have thought of before."
Surprise Seconds will also be supported by First And Seconds, an out-of-home advertising series featuring creative developed by Ziploc® Brand that shows food from its original form, how it's stored for later and then reinvented as a new dish. QR codes will direct consumers to the campaign hub.
Consumers can visit ziploc.ca/en-ca/food-for-thought to explore Surprise Seconds recipes, leftover inspiration and Ziploc® Brand product suggestions, and follow @ziploc on Instagram and @Ziploctheoriginal on TikTok for new food transformations throughout the campaign. Consumers can also download the Too Good To Go app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to find Surprise Bags available near them.
